Belief reviewed on synthpop.ru:
Synthez Observer posts an enigmatic, but flattering
review of TDOL's 1997 release, Belief.
As the review was presented in Russian, TDOL asked
for a English interpretation. Synthez Observer replies:
Hello
Kirk! Well, here's the approximate version of what
I wrote about it all: "Another synthpop revelation
"Belief" has come from the New World, from the native
land of Colorado beetles. The second album Kirk
Taylor - the pilot of synth-folklore project The
Dignity of Labour, the singer of pastoral cowboy-spartan
unpretentious romanticism, and simply lovely photogenic
young man from the American province. Literally
from the very first song off the album, it feels
of, like one expert, one-man project spirit. Indeed,
production deserves a certain paternalistic reproach
though, at all riches of a choice, it is difficult
to name the given album primitive and monocelled
creation. But some other circumstance imposes: through
spheres where influence of immaculate conception
and development of the American dream plus democratic
fast-food fusion comes to life, such a special music
has been born rather unordinary in every respect.
Soaring, soft and elegant likewise "sessna" (a type
of jets), almost sacramental atmosphere of velvet
lounge, jammed up with quite symmetric synth-effects
and the touching vocal appeal with old regime diphthongs
of times of Jack London. Skilful variations with
hygienically clean musical forms are poured by the
cascade from one songs to another, reviving in memory
echoes of imperishable early Pet Shop Boys masterpieces,
crossed with Simply Red creativity of the "Stars"
epoch. However, probably, the maximal penetration
of TDOL music up to depths of ears and fibers of
soul will need a repeated playback of record for
the second, third, fourth time in a row unless this
"medicine" has yielded a final result. Probably,
it will require also the bottle or two of Chateau
Phelan-Segur, as a refined company for synthpop
aestheticism purist. We just highly hope you are
not in Utah now."
